About
About
As the premiere public arts school in the nation, the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture (UCLA Arts) plays a vital role in the cultural and artistic life of the campus and the broader community. Guiding our mission is the belief that the arts are not only an essential part of the cognitive, critical, inquisitive life of a public research university, but the practice and presence of the arts are a cornerstone of the creative, innovative thinking and collaborative approaches that the 21st century demands.
One of 12 prestigious professional schools at the University, the School of the Arts and Architecture offers leading programs in four degree-granting departments: Architecture and Urban Design, Art, Design | Media Arts, and World Arts and Cultures/Dance. Our commitment to innovative education, pioneering research, dynamic public service, and community engagement is fueled by our unwavering belief in the fundamental value of creativity and the artist’s unique ability to change the world and shape the future.
Our students have unparalleled opportunities to learn from and interact with distinguished faculty who rank among the most accomplished artists, designers, architects, performers, ethnographers, and scholars of our time. Grounded in an understanding of the profound interdependence between creativity and academic research, our innovative and rigorous programs combine studio-based practice with critical studies and liberal arts scholarship—all within the context of a leading research university. In advancing this holistic approach to arts education, the school strives to motivate and empower its students to serve as cultural leaders of the 21st century.
Our programs encourage interdisciplinary inquiry and creative production while upholding the highest standards of excellence and innovation within each discipline. Deep thematic through lines that are shared between departments and across disciplines create a fertile platform for collective inquiry, dialogue and creative production. Our eight research centers foster groundbreaking connections between the arts and other disciplines, bringing together creativity and research to address issues such as global health, climate change, urbanism and other critical challenges of the 21st century.
Our Visual and Performing Arts Education Program (VAPAE) offers students the opportunity to develop into informed teaching artists while delivering hands-on arts programming to K–12 students in underserved communities. A dynamic public events program and special projects extend VAPAE’s engagement with the community and position the School at the forefront of the local and national debate about the importance of K-12 arts education.
Our internationally acclaimed museums—the Fowler and the Hammer—and groundbreaking performing arts program—UCLA's Center for the Art of Performance—offer students, faculty and the broader community rich access to leading anthropological, historical and contemporary visual arts exhibitions and collections, performances, lectures and workshops by established and emerging artists from Los Angeles and around the world. This unique, rich array of research centers, museums and performing arts programs broaden and enhance the experiences of our students and faculty.
Located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, the School offers a cosmopolitan arena for study and experimentation that reflects the diversity of our students and faculty. Los Angeles, a city on the leading edge of the 21st century, continues to attract pioneers in the arts and sciences who embrace the forward-looking spirit, dynamism, freedom, and possibilities for innovation that characterize this city.
While the heart of the school remains on the Westwood campus, its soul extends beyond the campus borders to the greater Los Angeles community with a wide variety of outreach programs designed by students, faculty, staff and alumni that include workshops, concerts, exhibitions, symposia, and dance productions; often presented in collaboration with groups throughout Los Angeles.

Chancellor Murphy and donor Dolly (Mrs. David) Bright pose in the campus Sculpture Garden named in his honor. The sculpture is Barbara Hepworth's Oval Form (Trezion). The sculpture garden is formally dedicated as the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, in honor of the retiring UCLA chancellor. The exhibition, Transparency, Reflection, Light, Space at the UCLA Art Galleries officially introduces the Light and Space movement, which is widely credited for putting L.A. on the art world map. The exhibition features artists Craig Kauffman ’55, ’56 and Peter Alexander ’65, ’68. The exhibition Teaching Artists at UCLA’s Wight Art Gallery emphasizes an aspect of the L.A. art scene that distinguishes it from the East Coast: that to teach is a crucial part of an artist’s life and practice. Royce Hall, closed since 1994 due to earthquake damage, reopens with a gala that raises $1.5 million to benefit the School of the Arts and Architecture and UCLA Performing Arts (formerly the UCLA Center for the Performing Arts and then known as UCLA Live). Glorya Kaufman Hall opens, made possible by an $18 million gift from Glorya Kaufman. The donation marks the largest gift to the arts in UC history at the time, and the first core academic building on campus to be renamed for a woman. Thom Mayne’s research studio, now called The Now Instititute, earns the Department of Architecture and Urban Design the 2005 Progressive Architecture Award from Architecture Magazine for “L.A. Now: Volume 3.” This marks the first time the Progressive Architecture Award was given exclusively to a university and to only one recipient rather than to several. The Department of Ethnomusicology at UCLA receives a pledge of $1 million from Dr. Mohinder Sambhi to establish the Mohindar Brar Sambhi Endowed Chair in Indian Music, named in honor of his late wife. An undergraduate degree in Architectural Studies is established through the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design. The new B.A. is the only program of its kind in the Southern California region. The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Center opens and Richard Serra's T.E.U.C.L.A. sculpture is installed, made possible by a $23.2 million gift from The Broad Foundation. Los Angeles 1955–1985: Birth of an Art Capital and Continuities of the Incomplete, a retrospective of the work of Distinguished Professor Thom Mayne and his architectural firm Morphosis, open at the Pompidou Center in Paris, a watershed for Los Angeles' reception as a serious global center of contemporary art, design, and culture. Philanthropists Ron and Madelyn Katz donate $1 million to establish the Mickey Katz Endowed Chair in Jewish Music at UCLA. UCLA Live (formerly the Performing Arts Center and now the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA) names Kristy Edmunds new executive and artistic director. Music industry executive and philanthropist Morris “Mo” Ostin donates $10 million for a state-of-the-art campus music facility, known as the Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center. Renowned jazz musicians Herb Alpert, Kenny Burrell, and Herbie Hacock launch a groundbreaking partnership between the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and the Thelonious Monk Instititute of Jazz. The partnership establishes a new graduate program in jazz. The Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA or CAP UCLA (formerly known as UCLA Live) is established. The UCLA Arts Award is established and presented to Herb Alpert. The UCLA Bruin Marching Band Opens for Rolling Stones Concert. Philanthropist Elaine Krown Klein donates $2 million to establish the Leo M. Klein and Elaine Krown Klein Chair in Performance Studies. The UCLA Arts Award is presented to Harold Williams. On January 21, 2016 the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is formally approved by the UC Regents, becoming the 12th professional school at UCLA and the first independent School of Music in the University of California system. Renowned art dealer and influential contemporary art world figure Margo Leavin donates $20 million to rebuild and expand its aging graduate art studio facilities. The complex will be renamed the UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios. Brett Steele becomes the first architect appointed as dean of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture (UCLA Arts).
