Hiromi Lorraine Sakata has been named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. The appointment was announced by Dean Daniel Neuman. Sakata replaces William Hutchinson, who has retired.

"Lorraine Sakata has demonstrated significant leadership both as an academician and as an administrator and is very highly regarded among her peers and colleagues," said Neuman. "I am delighted that she is joining the School and I look forward to the valuable contribution she will make towards our commitment to arts education at UCLA."

As Associate Dean, Sakata will be involved with the students, faculty, and curriculum of the six academic departments of the School: Architecture and Urban Design, Art, Design, Ethnomusicology, Music, and World Arts and Cultures.

Sakata comes to UCLA from the University of Washington, where she was professor of music and adjunct professor of anthropology. Sakata's scholarly area of interest has been primarily the music of Central and South Asia. Her book, "Music in the Mind: The Concepts of Music and Musician in Afghanistan," was published in 1983. Her current research interest is in the music of Pakistan. Her article, "Devotional Music of Pakistan," will appear in the forthcoming South Asia volume of the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music.

She has been the recipient of numerous grants, fellowships, and awards, including those from the Smithsonian Institution, Fulbright Scholar Program, Indo-U.S. Subcommission on Education and Culture, and the American-Pakistan Research Organization.
