Three new members have joined the Board of Visitors of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. They are Aubrey Chernick, Jerry Moss and Paul Reiser, all of Los Angeles. The announcement was made by Daniel Neuman, dean.
The Board of Visitors acts as liaison with the community, provides an understanding of the school’s teaching, research, and public service mission, and assists in procuring the financial resources needed to maintain the excellence of the school's programs. The board serves as a vital link between the professional architecture and arts worlds, the university and the community.
“Aubrey Chernick, Jerry Moss and Paul Reiser have demonstrated their strong support for the plans we have set forth to create the best university-based arts school in the country,” said Neuman. “We are delighted that they have chosen to express their continued commitment to our school by serving on our Board of Visitors.”
Aubrey Chernick is the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Candle Corporation in Santa Monica, one of the largest independent software vendors in the world. His clients include federal agencies, state governments, utilities and aerospace companies. He pioneered several innovations in the software industry and was one of the first entrepreneurs to use telemarketing for major software sales.
The Candle Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Candle Corporation, was founded in 1982 to fund worthy social and cultural programs. The foundation participates in community investment and redevelopment efforts, education and information dissemination programs, medical research, and drives to combat hunger and homelessness.
PC WORKS, founded by Chernick in 1995, began as an effort to refurbish and donate used computer equipment to nonprofit agencies and schools. The program was expanded to teach inner-city youth and young adults how to refurbish PCs and peripherals. Candle provides these students with in-depth instruction on software programs and languages, and hires interns to work throughout the company.
Jerry Moss is currently chairman of Rondor Music. In 1962, he cofounded A&M Records with Herb Alpert. The company became one of the most successful independent record companies, signing such music stars as Cat Stevens, Carole King, the Carpenters, Janet Jackson, The Police, Sting, Supertramp, Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, Peter Frampton, Joe Cocker, Styx, Quincy Jones and Burt Bacharach.
In 1989, A&M was sold to Polygram Records. Moss continued to run the label until 1993. He started a new company, Almo Sounds, Inc., in 1995. Artists recording on Almo have included Herb Alpert, Gillian Welch, Ozomatli and the alternative band Garbage.
Paul Reiser stars in “Mad About You,” the NBC series he created with Danny Jacobson. His performance in the show, which he also produces, has earned him Emmy, Golden Globe, American Comedy Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations for best actor in a comedy series. His book “Couplehood,” published in 1994, sold over two million copies and reached the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. His follow-up book was “Babyhood.”
Reiser has appeared in numerous motion pictures, including “Diner,” “Bye Bye, Love,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Aliens.” His television credits also include three seasons on “My Two Dads.” He wrote, produced and starred in an HBO special, “Paul Reiser: Out on a Whim,” and a Showtime special, “Paul Reiser: 3 1/2 Blocks from Home.”
The School of the Arts and Architecture offers a liberal arts education with an arts emphasis through its six academic departments: Architecture and Urban Design, Art, Design, Ethnomusicology, Music, and World Arts and Cultures. The academic departments are dedicated to training exceptionally creative artists, performers, architects and scholars who are enriched by a world view of arts and cultures, and who are prepared to serve as cultural leaders of the 21st century.
Also within the School are the public arts programs that complement and enhance the departments and provide exciting cultural resources for students, faculty and the Los Angeles community. They are the UCLA at the Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center, the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History and UCLA Performing Arts.
