The Department of Art in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture has received a gift of $100,000 from Dallas Price of Santa Monica to establish an endowed fund and to provide support for the New Wight Gallery. The donation was announced by Daniel Neuman, dean.
"We are very grateful to Dallas Price for her generosity, which will greatly assist us in the realization of the innovations taking place in the art department," said Neuman. "Her gift will help ensure that it maintains its position as one of the most highly-regarded and progressive programs in the nation."
The majority of the gift will be designated to establish The Dallas Price Endowed Fund for Art. Income from the fund will support the most innovative projects and pressing needs of the department, and may include lecture series and symposia, visiting artists, exhibitions of student work, and the production of catalogues showing student projects.
In addition to the endowed fund, Price's gift will directly assist the New Wight Gallery's annual exhibitions program, which includes an M.F.A. thesis show, a juried exhibition of undergraduate work, a group show of work by graduating seniors, and several exhibitions curated and produced by a committee of art students. Price has also made plans to support the School of the Arts and Architecture with a bequest of $1 million.
The donation reflects Price's long-standing and important involvement with the university. She joined the UCLA Board of Trustees in 1989, serves on Campaign UCLA's Cabinet, Board of Governors, and Board of Directors, and has been active at the UCLA Law School.
I have a contemporary art collection that gives me great pleasure and I live in an architecturally exciting home," said Price. "With my donation I want to encourage and make it possible for students to reach greater heights so their talents can bring joy to others. I hope my gift will help make it possible for UCLA's art students to fulfill their career hopes and for the department to continue to provide them with an outstanding education."
"We are grateful to Dallas Price for her personal interest in the visual arts and for the exceptional generosity of her gift," said Mary Kelly, chair of the department. "The endowment will support the innovative programs in the Department of Art, including the exhibitions program, which constitutes an essential part of our students' professional training."
Aiming to raise $1.2 billion by June 30, 2002, Campaign UCLA is the most ambitious private fund-raising effort in the history of public higher education. To date, more than $813 million has been raised to support students, faculty, academic programs and facilities across the campus. The comprehensive endeavor is engaging thousands of members of the UCLA family – alumni and friends, corporations and foundations, faculty and staff – in partnerships inspired by the Campaign UCLA theme, "Where Great Futures Begin."
