BILL IVEY, CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS, TO DELIVER COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS JUNE 19 FOR UCLA'S SCHOOL OF THE ARTS AND ARCHITECTURE

WHO: Bill Ivey, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) since 1998, will deliver the commencement address to UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture (A&A) graduates.

Prior to heading the NEA, Ivey was Director of the Country Music Foundation in Nashville, Tennessee. Ivey's extensive involvement with the Endowment dates from 1975. He has chaired or served on fifteen different grant panels, including those for jazz fellowships, folk and traditional arts, and the former Challenge and Advancement programs.

He is a staunch protector of America's living cultural resources and a passionate advocate for many diverse art forms. A folklorist and musician, he is recognized for his national leadership in preserving historic recordings of popular and classical music. He was a national trustee of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and served two separate terms as Academy chairman.

Ivey was born in Detroit and was educated at the University of Michigan and at Indiana University.

WHAT: The A&A commencement is open to the public. The School’s six academic departments are: architecture and urban design, art, design, ethnomusicology, music, and world arts and cultures.

Degrees to be conferred: 203 Bachelor of Arts, 5 Master of Arts, 21 Master of Fine Arts, 9 Master of Music, 48 Master of Architecture I, 38 Master of Architecture II, 10 Master of Arts in Architecture, 15 Master of Arts in Dance/Movement Therapy, 14 Doctor of Philosophy, 10 Doctor of Musical Arts. The doctorate hooding ceremony will take place on Friday, June 18 at 7 p.m. in Royce Hall.

WHEN: Saturday, June 19, 1999, 4-5:30 p.m.

WHERE: Perloff Quad, UCLA campus

PARKING: Enter campus at Westholme Avenue entrance off Hilgard. On-campus parking is available for $5.

The School of the Arts and Architecture is dedicated to the education and training of exceptional artists, architects, designers, musicians and scholars whose global view of the arts will prepare them well to serve as cultural leaders of the 21st century.
