Edythe and Eli Broad Honored at Commencement EDYTHE and ELI BROAD received the UCLA Medal at the UCLA Arts commencement ceremony in June. The medal was established in 1979 as the university's highest honor, reserved for those individuals who have made distinguished contributions to their professions, to higher education, to society and to the people of UCLA. In presenting the award, chancellor Albert Carnesale cited the Broads as "tireless and generous champions of education, the arts, leadership and management, and medical research . . . [who have] created a lasting legacy not only across the UCLA campus, but throughout Southern California and beyond." In his keynote address following the presentation, Eli Broad addressed three topics: why the arts matter, why it's important to take risks and not follow conventional wisdom, and why it's important to give back. "American arts and architecture are leading the world", he told the graduates. "You are our future. You will continue to establish our country’s place as the artistic capital of the world." conferred 216 Bachelor of Arts degrees, 122 Masters’ degrees, and 39 doctorates. |
